Donna Coveney has been appointed as MIT’s next dean of admissions, effective immediately, following Stuart Schmill ’86’s announcement. Coveney has served as MIT’s interim director of admissions since April 2007, where she made “significant contributions” to the admissions process. Schmill praised her leadership during the 2007-2008 admissions cycle, which saw an unprecedented number of applicants and is expected to result in a highly diverse and talented incoming class. The search committee, led by Professor Emeritus Paul Gray and including MIT President Emeritus Paul Gray, was commended for selecting Coveney. She expressed her gratitude for the confidence placed in her by the administration and emphasized her appreciation for working with MIT’s admissions team, highlighting the positive impact of the admissions office on student recruitment.
During her tenure at MIT, Shari Schmill has excelled in several pivotal leadership roles, including serving as the senior associate director of admissions and the director of the Educational Council. Prior to her work in admissions, she held the position of director of Parent, Student, and Young Alumni Programs within the Alumni Office. Schmill, a native of Little Neck, New York, earned her SB degree in mechanical engineering from MIT in 1986. An article about her career appeared in MIT Tech Talk in April 2008.
