MIT has named Schmill as the new dean of student financial services, effective as of her transition into this role. Previously, she served as the interim executive director starting in September 2015, and now she will lead both aspects of this position, ensuring continuity and expanding her expertise in managing student financial affairs.

Dean of Undergraduate Education Dennis Freeman has announced that Dean of Admissions Stuart Schmill has been named the new dean of student financial services. Schmill, who served as the interim executive director of MIT Student Financial Services (SFS) since September 1, 2015, will now lead both offices under this dual role. His new title is dean of admissions and student financial services. Freeman praised Schmill, stating, “I am delighted that Stu has agreed to continue to oversee student financial services. Stu has served MIT in several capacities over the years, and he has a deep and abiding respect for the Institute that informs everything he does.” Freeman further highlighted Schmill’s contributions, noting that “Stu’s vision and creativity have steadily enhanced the admissions process at MIT, both for staff and for prospective students and their families. For many college applicants, at MIT or elsewhere, the admissions process can seem shrouded in mystery and impersonal. Stu and his staff have thought long and hard about how to address that problem, with great success. I am confident that Stu’s leadership qualities will be a wonderful addition to SFS.” Additionally, Schmill expressed gratitude to Freeman and acknowledged his support for the MIT community.

MIT has appointed Stu Schmill as its next Dean of Student Financial Services, with Freeman highlighting his extensive contributions to the institution. As interim executive director of SFS, Schmill has already demonstrated his impact, particularly in increasing financial aid access for students across various economic backgrounds. The financial aid budget for the 2016-17 academic year is set to rise by 10.4%, reaching $114.2 million, which will provide more substantial scholarships to nearly all students who qualify for aid. Schmill and Freeman’s combined leadership aims to enhance collaboration between MIT Admissions and the SFS office, paving the way for a more seamless and informed student experience from the time of application to graduation. Schmill, who has served at MIT for 29 years, previously held several key roles, including his tenure as director of Admissions and his leadership in various alumni and parent programs.
