The Class of 1997 has been admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), marking a notable milestone in MIT’s history. A total of 2,057 individuals have been offered admission, representing the largest group of applicants admitted to the institution in a single year. This admission marks an historic occasion, as it is the first time all job offers have been accepted for the incoming freshman class.

MIT admissions director Michael C. Behnke has reported that 32 percent of the 6,410 applicants for the upcoming freshman class, totaling 1,100 students, were accepted next fall. The number of applications decreased by 261 from the 6,671 received in 1992, with Behnke attributing this decline to a continuing interest drop in engineering fields. This trend was more pronounced at MIT compared to most engineering schools. In 1993, women made up 38 percent of the admitted students, while underrepresented minorities were only 13 percent. The math section of the SAT showed a slight increase—742 in 1992 to 747 in 1993—while the verbal section saw a small decrease, from 641 to 638.

MIT researchers are working to understand and mitigate the risks associated with extreme weather, creating tools that can help address these challenges. The Climate Grand Challenges initiative highlights how modeling, planning tools, and infrastructure analysis are transforming research into practical solutions for building resilience. A new focus on fiction and memoir is designed to enable the MIT community to celebrate storytelling’s power and strengthen social connections. Novel research has expanded our understanding of how enzymes influence the production of bacterial proteins, revealing new insights into how RNA molecules interpret genetic information. Meanwhile, Dr. Lanie McKinney is leading a project focused on her PhD journey, developing technology that could transform the Red Planet
