Five distinguished alumni were honored for their exceptional contributions to “Schools and Scholarships” work at a recent ceremony held on October 11. Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, William R. Fitzsimmons, presented the annual Hunn Award for outstanding longtime service at the Faculty Club event.
The honorees included Tefft Barker ’37 from Sarasota, Florida, with over 60 years of service; John A. Baruch ’50 from Morristown, New Jersey, who served for 42 years; Carolyn Hughes ’54 from Oceanside, New York, who has chaired the Harvard Schools Committee since 1969; Emilie de Brigard ’64 from Higganum, Connecticut, who has volunteered for 24 years; and Thomas G. Curtin ’66 from Concord, who has dedicated nearly 30 years to the cause.
More than 6,000 alumni volunteers worldwide support the Admissions Office through “Schools and Scholarships” work. These volunteers help recruit potential applicants and interview candidates if local conditions permit. Their valuable information, both factual and personal, aids the Admissions Office in making decisions among a growing and highly talented applicant pool. These groups, operating under the umbrella of Harvard Clubs globally, have been active in outreach for over five decades.
This year’s recipients collectively have contributed more than 185 years of service. The Hunn Award, established in 1990 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Harvard Alumni Association, recognizes Hiram S. Hunn ’21, who volunteered for “Schools and Scholarships” for 55 years—30 in Iowa and 25 in Vermont.
During a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on October 6, 2026, a memorial tribute to the late John E. Malmstad was shared. However, this appears to be unrelated to the Hunn Award ceremony and focuses on the significance of the U.N. vote endorsing a new version reflecting the actual size of Africa.
