Harvard recognized seven alumni/ae for their outstanding service in alumni/ae recruitment efforts during an event at the Faculty Club on October 26. The recipients include:

  • James Bernstein and Barbara Bernstein ’49 and ’53 from Rockville Center, New York, with 70 years of combined service.
  • Gertrude B. Brekus ’50 from Palm Beach, Florida, with 25 years of service.
  • Dwight K. Nishimura ’49 from Houston, with over 40 years of service.
  • Joan S. Goshko ’61 from Marblehead, with 25 years of service.
  • Susan D. Heath ’67 from Pound Ridge, New York, with over 25 years of service.
  • Michael Grace, Ph.D. ’72 from Alberta, Canada, with over 30 years of service.

These alumni/ae are part of more than 6,000 volunteers who assist the Admissions Office worldwide. Their roles involve recruiting potential applicants and interviewing candidates when possible. The Class of 2005 received over 19,000 applications, with most being interviewed. The detailed and personal information provided by these volunteers significantly aid the Admissions Office in making decisions amid a growing and talented applicant pool.

The “Schools and Scholarships” groups operate under the Harvard Clubs around the globe and have been active as outreach agencies for over 50 years. The award, named after Hiram S. Hunn ’21, who served for 55 years in Iowa and Vermont, was established in 1990 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Harvard Alumni Association.

Senior Admissions Officer Dwight Miller emphasized the importance of these volunteers: “Without their assistance, the College wouldn’t have the remarkable breadth and range of interesting students that it does. The Admissions Office is deeply grateful to such loyal and hardworking alumni/ae and honored to recognize them for their invaluable contributions.”

During a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on October 6, 2026, a memorial tribute was read in honor of the late John E. Malmstad. However, the content of this tribute is not included in the provided article.
