MIT has announced tuition and fee increases for the 2005-2006 academic year. The new tuition amount is set at $32,300, marking a 4.9% rise from the previous year. This decision was discussed during a meeting of the MIT Corporation on March 4th.
Dean for Undergraduate Education, Robert P. Redwine, highlighted the importance of maintaining educational quality despite the hike. He assured that the university would provide additional financial aid to prevent any adverse effects on students from low-income families. MIT is committed to its policies of need-blind admissions, need-based financial aid, and meeting the full demonstrated need of all undergraduate students.
About 16% of MIT’s undergraduate students come from households earning less than $41,000 annually. Ninety percent of these students receive some form of financial assistance, including scholarships, loans, and part-time jobs. Specifically, 58% of undergraduates benefit from need-based scholarships provided by MIT.
Elizabeth Hicks, executive director of Student Financial Services, explained that the average financial aid package for incoming students will be around $31,500. Total undergraduate financial aid from all sources is expected to exceed $88 million, with MIT contributing $65.5 million, a $7 million increase from the previous year.
