The Divinity School on the historic Sterling Divinity Quadrangle at Yale University welcomed its new class, which is notable for its diversity and academic excellence. The incoming cohort of 146 students represents a significant diversity, with participants hailing from seven different countries, 19 Christian denominations, and several Jewish movements. Their ages range from the early 20s to 56, showcasing a wide range of life experiences. Many students are pursuing joint degrees across the Divinity School and other departments, such as Medicine, Law, Forestry, Environmental Studies, and Management. Among them, six hold law degrees, and eight have earned doctoral degrees. Notable alumni include a researcher from Bell Labs and a photojournalist. The class also features practicing clinical psychologists, full-time homemakers, military chaplains, and a 20-year veteran screenwriter with a successful career in Hollywood and New York. The incoming class is 52% larger than the previous cohort, reflecting a growing commitment to diversity and quality. Academically, the group excels, with 14 graduates earning cum laude, 12 magna cum laude, and 9 summa cum laude. Fifteen students were recognized as Phi Beta Kappa members. The Dean of the Divinity School, Richard J. Wood, praised the class for its size, quality, and diversity, attributing this to the hard work of the Admissions and Financial Aid teams. These teams collaborated closely with university chaplains and college counselors across more than 100 campuses over the past two years to highlight the opportunities available at Yale Divinity School.

Yale Divinity School offers exceptional opportunities for students seeking careers in lay or ordained ministry, as well as scholarly research. Their academic programs reflect the dedication and preparation of these students. Among the incoming class, 78% are pursuing Master of Divinity or Master of Sacred Theology degrees to prepare for ordained ministry, while 54% are enrolled in the Master of Arts in Religion program, which equips them for teaching, research, pastoral counseling, and other non-ordained ministries. A small group of five students are classified as special students, likely requiring additional guidance or accommodations.

Additionally, 14 more students, an increase from nine in 1996, will join the Institute of Sacred Music, a graduate center affiliated with both the Divinity School and the Department of Music. This program focuses on the study of worship, theology, music, and related arts. Dean Wood has played a significant role in the school’s success, emphasizing the importance of early preparation for financial aid packages during the admissions process. A notable achievement this year was the record-breaking amount contributed to the Alumni Fund, with all of the funds directed toward student financial assistance. In 1996-97, over 50% of the school’s graduates made significant contributions toward scholarship support. The Yale Alumnae Association (YAA) Public Service Awards honor three Yalies for their contributions to New Haven and beyond. Meanwhile, progress toward renewable energy goals is being made with a significant milestone achieved in a geothermal project. A podcast series dedicated to sustainability is set to launch, offering insights into Yale’s environmental initiatives.
