I‘ve found the PDP incredibly beneficial, offering a unique blend of professional growth and personal development. As an undergraduate, I participate in various career events, attend networking sessions, and collaborate with professors and advisors. I’m currently an officer in the Economics Association, a student-run organization that organizes events and engages with the department. We recently held a retreat to Big Bear, where we discussed economic issues and shared ideas. Another highlight was my involvement in the Emerging Leaders Program, which introduced me to mentorship, field trips, and panel discussions on risk management. This program and the connections I made led to an internship and eventually a full-time job!

As a graduate student, I continue to benefit from a wide range of resources and opportunities. My department regularly sends out job postings, and we have pizza events that support networking among students and professors. Many of my graduate classes have repeat professors from my undergraduate days, allowing for deeper relationships and a smoother transition. For instance, in my undergraduate Economic Consulting class, I analyzed LA Metro ridership using econometric models. In my Advanced Economic Consulting class, I expanded on this work by building a more sophisticated model and integrating mapping software. Having familiar professors has made my journey through graduate school much easier.

The PDP offers several advantages over traditional degree programs. Typically, it takes six years to complete both undergraduate and graduate studies. With the PDP, you can finish in four to five years, saving both time and money. For example, the master’s program usually requires eight classes, but as a PDP student, I only need six. The number of units waived varies by degree, but it’s crucial to know that PDPs are exclusively available to USC undergraduate students.

The application process for PDPs is streamlined compared to traditional graduate applications. There’s no GRE requirement, and no essays or letters of recommendation are needed if you maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. You can apply for a PDP after completing 64 units at USC or during your junior or senior year (the semester before starting graduate coursework). Regarding funding, there are various scholarship options that carry over until you complete eight semesters at USC (ten if you’re studying Architecture). Financial aid carries over until the semester after you complete 144 units. However, completing your undergraduate degree may disqualify you from aid, so it’s essential to review USC’s policies carefully.

Planning ahead is key. It’s advisable to meet with your academic advisor to create a prospective course plan before applying. If you’re considering a career impact or want to save time and money, a PDP could be a fantastic choice. These programs are available across nearly every department, covering a broad range of fields. It’s never too early to start thinking about graduate school, so I strongly encourage you to reach out to your academic advisors if you’re interested!
