Ofelia Alvarez, a UF third-year medical student, has been awarded the prestigious Katherine J. Pierce, M.D., Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship, established by UF alumna and award-winning pediatrician Dr. Katherine J. Pierce, supports students pursuing meaningful and impactful careers in medicine. Alvarez, a first-generation student from an underserved community, shares her journey of overcoming barriers to achieve her goal of becoming a physician advocating for patients who may feel unheard or overlooked.

Alvarez grew up in Orlando, Florida, where she often acted as a bridge between her Colombian-immigrant parents and the healthcare system. As an interpreter for her Spanish-speaking family, she became deeply attuned to the challenges faced by patients, particularly those who spoke Spanish but were unable to explain their concerns in English. “I remember how frustrated my mother felt having to ask me for help explaining her pain to the doctor,” Alvarez said. “I always feared making mistakes and how this could affect my family, and I felt that physicians could not fully see my parents for who they were as people.” Those experiences deeply influenced her path to medicine and her commitment to advocacy.

AHFALCEFAR While an undergraduate at UF, Alvarez dedicated herself to addressing disparities in healthcare for underserved populations. She worked with the Helping Hands Clinic, contraCOVID Gainesville, and the Health Education and Literacy Organization, where she translated medical documentation and provided support to low-health literacy patients. She also served as the Spanish translation director for two student organizations, further solidifying her dedication to making healthcare accessible to underserved communities. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2022, she remained in Gainesville to work as a health center coordinator at a reproductive health clinic, where she continued to advocate for equitable care.

AHFALCEFAR Alvarez’s post-graduation work includes being an officer with the Equal Access Clinic Network, where she volunteers alongside medical students to provide care to underserved patients in her community. “Getting to connect and advocate for patients whose shoes I was once in is incredibly fulfilling,” she said. Her experiences have inspired her to pursue a career in medicine with the goal of making a positive impact on the lives of those who may otherwise go unnoticed.
