Advocating through medicine, UF medical student and scholarship recipient Ofelia Alvarez is committed to helping underserved communities. Growing up in Orlando, Alvarez often acted as a bridge between her family and the healthcare system. As the daughter of Colombian immigrants, she became an interpreter for her Spanish-speaking parents at a young age, helping fill out paperwork and explain symptoms during medical visits. Alvarez said, “I remember how frustrated my mother felt having to ask me for help explaining her pain to the doctor. I always feared making mistakes and how this could affect my family, and I felt that physicians could not fully see my parents for who they were as people.” Those early experiences shaped her path to medicine.

Alvarez is a first-generation college student and the first in her family to pursue a medical career. Now a third-year medical student, she said her parents’ resilience and determination inspired her to become a physician who champions for patients who may feel unheard. Alvarez said receiving the Katherine J. Pierce, M.D., Endowed Scholarship at the University of Florida College of Medicine has helped make her medical education possible. “Finding out that I was awarded this scholarship was truly a blessing,” she said. “Most of my educational journey has been funded by scholarships similar to this one, and it has given me the privilege to pursue an education that I otherwise would not have been able to.”

Alvarez is passionate about caring for underserved patients and helping those who may otherwise fall through the cracks of the healthcare system. While attending UF as an undergraduate, Alvarez became involved in efforts to support underserved and vulnerable patient populations through volunteer work with the Helping Hands Clinic, contraCOVID Gainesville, and the Health Education and Literacy Organization. She translated hundreds of pages of medical documentation and clinic evaluations for Spanish-speaking patients and their families and, as a Spanish translation director for two student organizations, supporting patients facing low health literacy and health disparities.

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree in biology in 2022, she remained in Gainesville and worked as a health center coordinator at a reproductive health clinic, further strengthening her commitment to accessible, quality care. Through these experiences and the community and mentorship she found at UF, Alvarez gained confidence in her path toward medicine and saw reflections of her own family’s experiences in many of the patients she encountered. Today, she continues this work as an officer with the Equal Access Clinic Network, where she volunteers alongside fellow medical students to provide care for underserved patients in the community. “Getting to connect and advocate for patients whose shoes I was once in is incredibly fulfilling,” she said.

About the scholarship As a highly regarded internal medicine diagnostician, Katherine J. Pierce, M.D. ’82, has built a career grounded in clinical excellence, with expertise in women’s health, menopause, metabolic health and nutrition. She also has been a leader in organized medicine and a champion for the professional development of women physicians. Her time at the UF College of Medicine shaped her personally and professionally. It taught her to approach challenges as opportunities, embrace every opportunity and never give up. Through the Katherine J. Pierce, M.D., Endowed Scholarship Fund, Pierce hopes to help future physicians with an experience as meaningful as her own.

She knows that medicine requires more than scientific knowledge. It calls for dedication, compassion, and an understanding of both the human body and human spirit. By supporting medical students through scholarships, she hopes to help them embrace the opportunities before them and develop the knowledge, confidence, and commitment to make a difference in the lives of their patients.
