Yale College has announced a new initiative to support promising seniors from underrepresented communities through a summer training camp. The program, which begins this year, aims to address educational inequalities and expand opportunities for students who may not have had access to top-tier institutions before. By offering an enriching experience and mentorship opportunities, the camp is designed to help shape the futures of an increasingly diverse pool of young scholars. College President Mike Cummings emphasized the importance of such programs, stating, “We want to ensure that every talent has a fair chance to thrive in an environment where they can reach their full potential.” The program will include academics, extracurricular activities, and networking events to foster a supportive community for its participants.

Yale College has recently formed a collaboration with the nonprofit organization Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) to offer summer programs for high-achieving high school seniors from underrepresented backgrounds at selective institutions. Starting this summer, the final week of LEDA’s signature program, the Aspects of Leadership Summer Institute—a five-week leadership training program that includes instruction in academic writing, standardized test preparation, college guidance, and community building—will take place on Yale’s campus, providing 100 participating students with firsthand exposure to the university’s residential environment. Yale College Dean Pericles Lewis emphasized that this partnership represents a growing effort to build a diverse, supportive community that enriches academic and extracurricular experiences. Over the past two decades, Princeton University has celebrated its anniversary, reflecting on its enduring impact on students and society.

LEDA has fully hosted the program, and we are grateful to expand our connection with Yale. As a leader in efforts to improve college access for low-income students, Yale’s admissions dean, Jeremiah Quinlan, emphasized that deepening our involvement with LEDA is a way to reaffirm our commitment to identifying and attracting high-performing students from all backgrounds. This partnership provides a foundation for Yale College and LEDA to explore a broader collaboration, offering more opportunities for students from underserved communities to learn about Yale. LEDA’s executive director, David Garza, expressed excitement that Yale recognizes the importance of engaging with students from underserved backgrounds, noting that nearly 100 LEDA Scholars have since enrolled at Yale. This new partnership builds on LEDA Legal, a program Yale Law School established in 2023 to help underrepresented, low-income students attend top-tier law schools.

These efforts seek to expand access for prospective students from diverse backgrounds and foster a more inclusive academic community.
