Destination: Africa. Students Spent their Summer Volunteering in Malawi and Ghana | Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Students from Boston University’s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine have had the opportunity to immerse themselves in global health initiatives in Malawi and Ghana during their summer break. These students were selected through the Global Health Summer Scholarship Program, which provides funding for research, language immersion, and community health projects.

In Malawi, students worked with K2 TASO, a nonprofit organization focused on improving rural healthcare in Malawi. They conducted interviews and home visits, providing care to patients in challenging conditions, such as those without access to electricity or clean water. Students were inspired by the dedication of K2 TASO’s executive director, Peter Minjale, who went above and beyond to support their work. One student highlighted the profound impact of the volunteers’ efforts: “We were tackling serious, serious issues with a positive attitude,” shared student Joel George, noting the life-changing experience of interacting with communities in need.

Meanwhile, in Ghana, Natasha Soesanto, a second-year student, worked with Project SHIELD-AC to address sudden infant death syndrome (SUDI). Her experiences included collecting data, recruiting participants, and conducting interviews with healthcare providers in a remote area. The program was supported by a grant from the American SIDS Institute and involved Julie Herlihy, a clinical associate professor at BU’s School of Public Health.

These initiatives not only provided valuable insights into global health challenges but also fostered cross-cultural collaboration and personal growth. Students expressed a desire to continue their work in these regions in the future, with some planning to return to Ghana for further research. The global health experience has inspired many to consider careers in international healthcare and public health.
