Tufts University has released its short answer questions for the Class of 2031. First-year applicants are required to respond to two prompts. These responses aim to provide the Admissions Committee with insights into the candidates’ unique qualities and interests, as well as their enthusiasm for attending Tufts.

The first prompt asks applicants to describe how they have learned about and engaged with Tufts during their college search process. The maximum word count is 75 to 150 words. Instead of summarizing Tufts’ general information from the website, students should focus on specific actions they took to learn about the university. This could include attending virtual or in-person events, watching videos, reading blog posts, or engaging in conversations. The goal is to highlight what made Tufts stand out and inspired them to apply.

The second prompt is tailored to each applicant’s intended school or program. For applicants to the School of Arts and Sciences, the question is: “Tell us about one of your favorite school assignments in the past two years. What was the assignment and why did you enjoy it?” The word limit for this prompt is 100 to 200 words. Similarly, for applicants to the School of Engineering, the question is: “Tell us about an engineering or science-related project that you have helped build, design, create, or iterate in the past two years. What was the project and what was your role?” Again, the word limit is 100 to 200 words.

Applicants to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program are asked: “Tell us more about a specific piece in your portfolio. What were the ideas you intended to explore, and how did those ideas inform the process of making the piece?” The word count for this prompt is also 100 to 200 words. Finally, for applicants to the Combined Degree (BFA+BA/BS) program, the question is: “Tell us more about a specific piece in your portfolio. How did an academic course, project, or interest inspire the ideas that you explored in this piece? Or, how did making this piece influence your academic interests?” This prompt also allows for a 100 to 200-word response.

Tufts Admissions strongly advises against using generative artificial intelligence (AI) for writing these essays and short answer responses. The committee notes that AI-generated responses tend to be less creative and less persuasive than the applicant’s own writing. It is expected that applicants will present their original ideas in their own words.

Applicants can begin submitting their applications starting August 1st. They should visit either the Common Application site or the Coalition Application by Scoir site to start the process. The university looks forward to getting to know each candidate through their applications.
