Before delving into the specifics of the SMFA at Tufts art portfolio, here’s a quick overview. When applying to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University (which includes the BFA or Combined Degree programs), you’ll need to submit a portfolio of studio art samples along with your application. This portfolio is reviewed as part of the holistic application process, helping the Admissions Committee understand your creative motivations, technical skills, and readiness to engage in a committed studio practice within the SMFA at Tufts community.
Now, let’s break down the details. The visual art portfolio must be submitted through the Applicant Status Page, which becomes accessible within 24 hours after receiving your application for admission. We advise scheduling a portfolio review session before the deadline to receive personalized feedback and tips for curating your portfolio effectively. The ideal portfolio showcases your conceptual development while demonstrating your technical abilities. Submit work that best represents your skills and experiences, regardless of the medium used. Your portfolio can include pieces from various media or a single medium. For more guidance, refer to the Tufts Admissions recommendations on portfolios.
All applicants to the BFA and Combined Degree (BFA+BA/BS) programs are required to submit a studio art portfolio containing 12-20 pieces of finished work completed in the past two years. If your practice involves time-based media like film, video, or animation, you can include up to ten minutes of video files, with individual clips not exceeding two minutes. If you’re submitting exclusively time-based work, ensure you include at least five examples. For further insights, explore the options for studying Film and Media Studies versus Film and Video at Tufts. Each artwork must be uploaded as individual files, not as multipage PDFs. Complete the ‘Edit Details’ section for each file to include the Title, Year, Size, Medium, and a Description. In the Description field, provide a 1-3 sentence summary of your goals for the piece and the steps you took to create it. For collaborative works, clearly state your role in the Description field. For detailed recommendations on portfolio descriptions, visit the Tufts Admissions guidelines.
Do not include architectural plans, scripts, performing arts, industrial design, or images of artwork with embedded descriptive text. Additionally, artworks created using generative AI (artificial intelligence) cannot be submitted in your SMFA at Tufts portfolio. We hope this guide helps you prepare your portfolio effectively! Join us for a virtual portfolio review soon – we’re excited to see your work!
